The one thing in the house nobody ever cleans, in a climate that gives it every reason to need it.
People change the sheets and consider the bed dealt with. Underneath them the mattress has been quietly absorbing everything for years. In an Algarve summer that is a significant amount of sweat, and the warmth and humidity that make this a pleasant place to live also make a mattress an unusually comfortable environment for dust mites and everything that comes with them.
Holiday lets and guest rooms are the worst of it, and the least examined. A mattress that has had forty different people sleep on it over a season has never been cleaned once, only covered with a fresh protector. Guests do not see it, so it never gets raised, right up until the point where somebody lifts a mattress protector and takes a photograph.
how we do it
Bedding off, protector off, and a proper look at both sides and the sides of the mattress. We tell you what we have found and what we think will and will not come out before we start.
Both faces, the piping and the seams, which is where the debris collects. This removes the dry material, and on most mattresses it is the single biggest improvement of the whole job.
Sweat, urine, blood and spills are all different chemistry and treating them the same way is how you set a stain permanently. Each one gets identified and treated appropriately.
The point of cleaning a mattress is mostly hygiene, so the whole sleeping surface gets treated rather than just the visible marks.
A mattress must not be soaked. It is cleaned with as little moisture as will do the job and the moisture is then drawn back out, because a mattress that stays damp inside is a considerably worse problem than the one you started with.
We set up airflow and give you a clear time before it should be made up and slept on. We would rather tell you to leave it a few extra hours than have you seal a damp mattress under a protector.
what is included
A fresh mark treated quickly normally comes out. A stain that has been sitting in a mattress for four years has bonded to the fibre and oxidised, and while it will lift and fade, expecting it to vanish is not realistic. Anyone who tells you otherwise before looking at the mattress is selling.
It is also worth saying plainly that the real benefit here is hygiene rather than appearance. What matters is what comes out of the mattress, not what the top of it looks like afterwards, and nobody sees the top of it anyway. If a mattress is past it structurally, sagging, broken down or badly contaminated all the way through, we will tell you that cleaning it is money you would rather put towards replacing it.
how we keep the standard
Every job is checked against the standard for that surface before the van moves, by someone who did not do the cleaning. If it is not right we put it right before you have to ask.

A few hours in most cases, and we will always give you a specific time for your mattress and your room. Do not put a protector or bedding back on until it is properly dry, because that traps whatever moisture is left.
The treatment targets mites and the allergens they leave behind, and the deep vacuum removes a great deal of the material they live on, which is the part that actually matters for anyone sensitive to them. What no honest cleaner can promise you is a permanently sterile mattress, because they come back over time. Regular cleaning keeps the population down.
We will lift it and lighten it, often considerably. Whether it disappears depends on what caused it and how long it has been there. We will look at it and tell you what to expect before we quote, rather than after.
Once a year for a bed in regular use, and more often for a guest room in a let, a child's bed or anywhere there is an allergy in the household.
Yes, and that is usually the sensible way to do it. Every mattress in the property in a single visit between changeovers, priced as one job, and it pairs naturally with the carpets and the soft furnishings while we are there.
